Jamaican Lottery Scam, Car Stolen From Driveway, Drug Activity: Police

La Grange police reports from Nov. 19-26 include theft of a car that was unlocked and had the keys inside, charges following auto accidents, drug paraphernalia possession and a caller who told a woman she'd won the Jamaican lottery.

Drug Activity Suspected 

Police are investigating a call reporting drug activity in a building on Washington Avenue, across the street from the community center. The caller told police the drug dealer is a woman, about 40, and that she was dealing from the second floor.

Solicitors Reported

A woman in the 600 block of South Madison Street reported a group of men who were giving free estimates for a window company. Police sent the man, who was from Window Works, with his team of six people to get a village permit.

Address Numbers, 'No Soliciting' Sign Stolen From House 

A man in the 500 block of South Sunset Avenue reported someone took the address numbers and a “no soliciting” sign off his house sometime between Nov. 20 and Nov. 24.

License Arrest

Police charged Susana Lopez, 29, of Carol Stream, with driving on a suspended/revoked license during a traffic stop near the intersection of Calendar Street and La Grange Road about 12:45 p.m. She was given a Jan. 9 court date and released.

Sunday, November 24

Drug Paraphernalia Possession

Police charged John Pirtle, 19, of the 400 block of North Park Avenue in La Grange Park, with possession of drug paraphernalia in the 500 block of East Shawmut Avenue. 

Car Stolen From Driveway

A woman reported her Honda Fit was stolen from her driveway in the 100 block of Bluff Avenue sometime during the night. Police said the keys had been left in the unlocked car. The total estimated loss is $10,000, police said. 

Friday, November 22

Suspicious Activity 

A woman in the 0-100 block of Beacon Place reported two women had been camping out on the north side of her building about 9:15 p.m. The women were sent on their way.

Jamaican Lottery Scam 

A woman in the 300 block of South Kensington Avenue reported she’d been receiving phone calls from a man who told her she’d won the Jamaican lottery, and that he’d send her a check if she sent him money to pay for the taxes. She told police the man threatened her when she said she was going to call the police. Police contacted the caller, who initially denied the calls, but then agreed to stop calling the woman, police said. 

Man Charged With Failure to Yield, No Insurance After Accident on Ogden

Police issued two citations to Zachary Greene, 21, of the 0-100 block of North Kensington Avenue in La Grange, for failure to yield and driving without insurance after he hit a car near the intersection of Ogden Avenue and La Grange Road. 

Police said Greene hit the front passenger side of a westbound 2006 Mazda 6 while he was turning right out of the BP/McDonald's lot about 7:30 a.m. He told police he did not see the car. No one was injured.

Driving Without a License

Police charged Ronald Velazquez, 23, of Hillside, with driving without a license during a traffic stop near the intersection of Calendar Street and La Grange Road about 9:40 p.m. He was given a Dec. 2 court date.

Wednesday, November 20

Suspicious Man Runs From Home

A woman reported suspicious activity after her son called her and told her a man wearing black ran out the front door of their home in the 0-100 block of Bassford Avenue about 4:45 p.m., while the kids were home with the babysitter.

Driving Without Insurance

Police charged Arlene Romaine, 50, of Darien, with driving without insurance after an accident at the intersection of La Grange Road and Harris Street about 1 p.m. No one was injured.

Tuesday, November 19

Failure to Yield

Police charged Barbara Sobus, 58, of McCook, with failure to yield after she hit a car making a left turn onto a private drive from 47th Street about 5:45 p.m. No one was injured.
