Brookfield Man Arrested for Meat Theft

Police arrested Ariel Diaz, 50, of Brookfield for stealing from Jewel, 507 E. Woodlawn Ave. around 4 p.m.

A Jewel employee told police he saw Diaz fill a basket with a lot of meat products, then transfer the meat into a reusable bag, cover it with a loaf of bread and a package of bagels and leave the store, police said.

Diaz then ran across Sherwood Avenue and into Memorial Park when the employee tried to stop him, police said.

When in custody, Diaz told police he went into Jewel to deposit a check at TCF Bank and decided to pick up some dinner for his family, but he didn’t pay because he knew the check he’d deposited wouldn’t clear for a couple of days, police said. He added he planned on freezing and eating a lot of the meat and selling some of it.

He was processed, given a criminal trespass notice from Jewel and a June 26 court date.
