Business Windows Smashed, Kids Start Fire with Microwave: La Grange Police Blotter

La Grange police reports, Oct. 4-7.

SUNDAY, OCT. 7

Identity Theft Investigation

A resident filed a report at 5:52 p.m. claiming to be a victim of identity theft. Police ascertained that the resident and her husband were in an ongoing process with the IRS, Social Security office and Federal Trade Commission over a potentially fraudulent tax return filed under her Social Security number, and that the resident had been advised to make a matter-of-record note with local police.

Drug Smoking, Selling Reported

Police received a resident report at 11:12 a.m. that two teenage boys were sitting on benches in Stone Park in La Grange Park smoking marijuana. The caller also advised police that she believed there were drug transactions taking place in the parking lot between North Waiola Avenue and Hillgrove Avenue. Police were unable to locate the boys but set a special watch for the parking lot.

Help, I'm Trapped in the Hospital

A man called police from Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at 11:06 a.m. demanding to speak with a supervisor and claiming that he was being held against his will for no reason. The caller refused to allow police to contact his daughter on his behalf. Police notified the man’s nursing supervisor and advised the man to speak with his doctor. (Police also received a similar call at 3:15 p.m. on Saturday and were advised that the caller is a “psych patient” and is being taken care of.)

Vanishing Party

An anonymous call at 11:53 p.m. advised police that there was a “party” going on in the south side of Elm Park. After being delayed by a train, responding officers found nothing going on.

Car Sale Gone Wrong

Police responded to the 0-100 block of South Spring Avenue to a complaint at 4:44 p.m. that a private transaction to purchase a vehicle had gone awry. The seller took $1,800, entered her house to get the car’s title and didn’t come back for 20 minutes. Police returned the money to the complainant.

Theft (Maybe)

Police received a report of theft of more than $500 from the 0-100 block of Cossitt Avenue 11:57 a.m.; a case file was opened. Police said they are currently working to determine if a theft did occur.

Dog Found and Returned

A resident of the 1200 block of Carriage Lane reporting having found a lost white Bichon Frise dog at 7:38 a.m. The dog was reunited with its owner.

Ransacked Volkswagen

A resident of the 200 block of Leitch Avenue reported at 6:47 a.m. that someone had “gone through” her unlocked parked Volkswagen during the night. Police opened a case file.

FRIDAY, OCT. 5

Mystery Hand at the Window

A resident of the 700 block of South 11th Avenue called at 9:34 p.m. to report that she had seen a hand knocking on her window and was too frightened to look. Police found the area clear and “believed it was kids knocking on the side window messing around.”

Danger with Microwaves

Police responded to a fire in an alley on the 0-100 bock of La Grange Road at 6:45 p.m. Police said that the fire was caused by unsupervised kids attempting to dispose of something that they were microwaving that had caught on fire. A resident was advised to supervise the kids.

THURSDAY, OCT. 4

Too Young to Smoke

A 17-year-old girl was issued a compliance ticket at 3:30 p.m. at the corner of Elm Avenue and Stone Avenue for underage possession of tobacco.

Downtown Windows Smashed

An unknown person or person smashed four windows in the front of a business on the 0-100 block of Hillgrove Avenue. Police received a report at 7:29 a.m. and said that no entry was made to the business. A case file was opened.
