Mulch Ignites, Prompts 4 Responses
A pile of wood chips on fire at Burlington and Tilden avenues on park district property caused La Grange police to come out on four different occasions.
The fire department responded at about 12:30 p.m. April 26 and at about 10:09 a.m. April 27. A police officer who responded at about 10:26 a.m. April 28 to the chips smoldering again, moved around the mulch a little. Police were called again at about 10:54 a.m. April 29 and Public Works will handle the turning of the mulch.
A change in temperatures often affects the decomposition of the mulch and causes heat and steam, said one police official.
