Blotter: La Grange News Stand Busted in Tobacco Sting and More

The following items are from Patch's reporting of the La Grange police blotter.

Charge in Tobacco Sting

A 41-year-old employee, Tahir Perverz, at the , 4 W. Burlington Ave., was issued a local ordinance violation ticket Feb. 29 for selling tobacco to a minor during a police sting. The license holder also will be issued a citation on March 7, police said.

La Grange police regularly check the 10 village businesses with tobacco licenses over a multiple number of days with a youth to see if they sell tobacco products to the minor, according to Patrick Fulla, investigator. No other businesses failed during the second half of the 2011-12 sting, he said.

Fires Reported—Updated

A fire was reported Feb. 27 at Maple and Waiola avenues in a school bus headed to pick up students at the Lyons Township High School north campus, 100 S. Brainard Ave., at about 2:56 p.m.  The driver had just turned when the horn began to blow and smoke came from the dashboard, said La Grange Fire Chief William Bryzgalski. No students were on the bus, he said. Firefighters extinguished a  fire. The battery was disconnected and the bus was towed, he said.

A smell of smoke was reported from a building on the 100 block of west Calendar Avenue at about 9:12 a.m. Feb. 29 caused by motor windings from the furnace  connected to a power surge in nearby La Grange Park, the fire chief said.

Stolen Purse Found

The owner of a business on Arcade Place turned in a purse she found Feb. 27 outside the business that had been stolen from an employee at Al’s Charhouse, 32 S. La Grange Road. Nothing of value was in the purse, police said.

Wallet Found

A black wallet with less than $10 inside was found at Gilbert and Maple avenues and turned in to La Grange police on Feb. 27.  

Loud Music Heard

Called to an apartment of a building on the 1000 block of west Hillgrove Avenue at about 11:08 p.m. Feb. 29, La Grange police said they also found people talking loudly and told them to keep the music and voices down.

Tracking Lost Phone

A 48-year-old La Grange man who was found walking on the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad tracks between Catherine and Hayes avenues at about 7:56 a.m. Feb. 29 told police he was looking for a cell phone he lost the previous night.

4 Taken to Hospital

A 55-year-old Glen Ellyn man was taken by La Grange Fire Department ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 8:03 p.m. Feb. 29 after he reported not feeling well while in a business on the 300 block of west Hillgrove Avenue.

An employee of Grayhill Inc., 561 W. Hillgrove Ave. was taken by ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 10:55 a.m. Feb. 28 after she was vomiting.

A 35-year-old woman with a  knee injury was transported by ambulance from Gurrie Middle School, 1001 S. Spring Ave., to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 9 a.m. Feb. 28.  

A 16-year-old boy was taken to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 8:24 a.m. Feb. 28 after he ran into another student during a physical education class in the Vaughan Building of the Lyons Township High School north campus 100 S. Brainard Ave.
