Blotter: Accident at Ashland and Ogden Sends Three to Hospital, Naked Stranger on Couch and More

The following items are from Patch's reporting of the La Grange and La Grange Park police blotters.

Three people were taken by ambulances to hospitals after a three-car crash at about 5:21 p.m. March 27 at Ogden and Ashland avenues where La Grange police said a driver disregarded a sign requiring right turns only during morning and afternoon rush hours.

A 65-year-old Homer Glen woman, whom police said caused the accident, and her 90-year-old passenger from La Grange Park were taken to Loyola Hospital in Maywood.  A 31-year-old Brookfield woman, who drove the second car, was taken to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital. The third driver did not request medical attention.

The Homer Glen woman was ticketed for disobeying a traffic control device and failure to yield at an intersection.

She told police she was facing north on Ashland and did not see the sign that requires right turns from 4 to 6 p.m.  Her car pulled out into traffic and was hit by a westbound vehicle driven by the Brookfield woman, police said. The first car then struck a vehicle facing southbound on Ashland, police said.

That intersection had been the site of traffic surveys and ticketing by La Grange police for those ignoring the sign.

Two Hurt in Accidents

A 72-year-old Western Springs man was taken by ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital after La Grange police said he was hit while walking across Ogden Avenue at East Avenue at about 3:40 p.m. March 22 by a northbound vehicle that was turning left to go west. That driver, a 64-year-old La Grange Park man, was not ticketed, according to the police report. 

A 32-year-old Chicago man was taken by ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital after a three-car, rear-end collision at 48th Street and La Grange Road at about 3 p.m. March 19. His car was northbound and slowing down because a vehicle in front of him was topped to turn left, police said. His car was hit from behind by a Countryside woman’s  vehicle and  stuck the rear of the stopped vehicle driven by another Chicago man, police said. No tickets were issued.

Naked Stranger On Couch

A resident of an apartment on the 300 block of east Plainfield Road reported finding an unknown man, with no clothes on, sleeping on his couch at about 4:15 a.m. March 29. The 28-year-old Countryside man was brought to the La Grange police station where he was allowed to make a couple telephone calls.

Marijuana Found

An 18-year-old La Grange man was arrested for possession of cannabis on the 700 block of south Madison Avenue at about 11:57 p.m. March 27.

Drug Paraphernalia Arrest

La Grange Park police arrested a Brookfield man whom they said they found March 20 with a “one-hitter” pipe on the rear deck of a home.  He was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police were called at about 2:51 p.m. that day to an address,  which was not disclosed to the press, for people smoking marijuana on a rear deck. Two officers found two males and a female on the deck and said they saw the Brookfield man put something, which appeared to be a one-hitter pipe used to smoke marijuana, in his mouth and light it with a lighter. An officer yelled at him to walk toward them and said he dropped both objects. Police said he smelled of marijuana and had extremely red and glassy eyes. His court date is April 11.

Dumping Brings Traffic Stop

The driver of a black Chevrolet Tahoe dumped a bag of empty beer cans at 41st Street and Dover Avenue at about 6:52 p.m. March 27 and was found later outside the Western Springs police station with a small amount of marijuana inside the vehicle, according to La Grange police. No more information was available March 30.

Drug Spoon, Syringe Found

A resident of the 500 block of south Spring Avenue found a spoon and syringe outside the home at about 7:29 p.m. March 27. A resident of that block may have thrown it there, police were told.

Son ‘Beat Up’, Hurt

A 23-year-old man, whose mother told police he was beat up, was taken by ambulance from the 400 block of East Avenue to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 12:42 a.m. March 28. His mother would not give police any more information. Police had the name of a possible offender but nothing else was available as of March 30.

Car Burglary Attempt Suspected

A resident of the 200 block of north Stone Avenue told police that a motion light went on at about 12:17 a.m. March 27 and he saw a 6-foot-tall man in his 20s wearing a white hoodie and blue jeans and trying to enter his car parked in the driveway. The resident banged on the home window and said the man ran toward Park Junior High. Police found a man in the area but he was not  arrested. No entry was made to the car or garage, police said.

Bicycle Stolen

A men’s Trek, 26-inch bicycle was stolen out of the courtyard of a building on the 0-100 block of south Stone Avenue, La Grange police learned March 28. The bicycle was a deep maroon color with a black seat.

Woman Sick at Church

A 40-year-old woman who was feeling ill at St. Cletus Church, 600 W. 55th St., was taken by ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 4:06 p.m. March 28.

Loud Music Reported

A group of people playing loud music and sitting in cars on the 100 block of Sawyer Avenue was reported at about 11:07 p.m. March 27. They promised police to turn off the music and move.

Skateboarder Cited

A 15-year-old Lyons boy got a compliance citation after La Grange police said they found him  skateboarding by the parking garage, 80 S. Sixth Avenue March 27.

Drivers Ticketed

A Chicago woman was ticketed March 22 after La Grange Park police said they saw her 2003 Pontiac going north on the 1400 block of Kemman Avenue at about 1:51 a.m. without a lit rear license plate. Luz Maria Montes-Demena was ticketed for no rear registration light, no valid driver’s license and no proof of insurance. Her court date is April 25.

Charles Whitman, 27, of Westchester was ticketed for four traffic violations, including driving under the influence of alcohol, when he was stopped at Harris and Sixth avenues at about 2:20 a.m. March 27, according to La Grange police.

Driver Reckless

A red “beater” car was reported weaving while heading north on La Grange Road at 47th Street at about 8:33 p.m. March 28, the vehicle was gone when police searched the area.
