8 Fire Departments Respond to Dryer Fire at Hospital

La Grange and La Grange Park firefighters, ambulance crews also answer smoke, fire and medical calls.

Firefighters from La Grange, La Grange Park, Western Springs and five other departments responded to a drier fire in the laundry room of the environmental services building at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, 5101 S. Willow Springs Road, at about 12:40 a.m. Feb. 27.  

The drier burned up causing, “a lot of smoke,” said La Grange Fire Chief William J. Bryzgalski.  The Brookfield, Lyons, McCook and Willow Springs fire departments and Pleasantview Fire Protection District also responded.

Electric Blanket Causes Fire

A faulty electric blanket on the bed of a basement apartment of a 12-unit multifamily building at 1020 S. Eighth Ave. caused an accidental fire at about 8:46 a.m. Feb. 24. The tenant was taken by ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital due to smoke inhalation.

Fire crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the building. Heavy smoke damage was confined to the apartment where the fire started; other units were not affected, according to a press release. Numerous residents were evacuated and allowed to return when the building was  deemed safe.

La Grange Park, Pleasantview, Brookfield, McCook and Willow Springs firefighters also responded.

Burnt Food Raises Alarm

Burnt food was found at the scene of a possible house fire on the -100 block of Bassford Avenue at about  5:57 p.m. Feb. 25, according to La Grange Fire Chief William J. Bryzgalski.

Smoke Seen at Bridge

Smoke near the Ogden Avenue bridge at about 4:34 p.m. Feb. 25 came from a small pile of coal and a board that were being burnt by residents of a home on the 300 block of East Avenue, according to La Grange fire and police officials. The residents were told not to do this again and will comply, police said.

Gas Smell Reported

The La Grange Fire Department responded to the small of natural gas in a home on the 300 block of Seventh Avenue at about 12:44 a.m. Feb. 26.

3 Taken to Hospital

A 50-year-old man who fell on the 100 block of La Grange Road and whose face was bleeding was taken by La Grange Park fire ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 3:47 p.m. Feb. 23.

A 2-1/2-year-old girl who was turning blue in a home on the 100 block of north Peck Avenue was taken by La Grange fire ambulance to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital at about 9:16 a.m. Feb. 23. The cause may have been a seizure, say fire officials.  

A 57-year-old La Grange man who was having trouble breathing on the Burlington Avenue side of the Stone Avenue train depot of Metra, 625 Burlington Ave., at about 10:02 a.m. Feb 23 was taken by Lla Grange ambulance to Hinsdale Hospital. He previously had had surgery to remove something from his throat.
