550 David Hasselhoff Cutouts Stolen from New England Convenience Stores

One of the thefts turned from stunt to serious this week when a 36-year-old clerk was critically injured in Shelton, CT, trying to stop a trio of suspects.

More than 550 cardboard cutouts of David Hasselhoff, Lyons Township High School’s most famous son, have been pilfered this summer from Cumberland Farms convenience stores in the northeast.

But one of the thefts turned from stunt to serious this week when a 36-year-old clerk was critically injured in Shelton, CT, trying to stop a trio of suspects, the Connecticut Post reports.

Three people in an SUV removed two cutouts from a light pole before the clerk approached them. As the suspects fled, their SUV struck and dragged the clerk through the parking lot.

Cumberland Farms ran the same promotion last year but ordered more cutouts this summer to try to keep up with the thefts, the report said. Overall, however, there have been fewer thefts this season, a company representative told the paper. The life-size images depict Hasselhoff holding an “Iced Hoffee.”

Hasselhoff tweeted his regrets Wednesday about the incident in Shelton.
