Hey Mom and Dad: What Holiday Gift Did You Refuse to Buy Your Child?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to Hey Mom and Dad—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting.

Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the western suburbs.

What's one holiday gift your kids asked for that you refused to get them, and why?

Take a look at what Patch users throughout the western suburbs had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Elizabeth Carini Salamon: Wii/DS. Kids spend way too much time with electronics. — Batavia Patch Facebook

Brenda Garcia: A Karaoke machine! Although someone else got it for them and I didn't know so I guess all I can do is add to my list some good ear plugs. Why? Three kids fighting to take a turn and "sing" very " beautiful" songs.... Not that I don't love their beautiful voices but we already sit to see them perform "dance" recitals for hours. Now we are going to have to add to that, "rock star shows". Lol. — Burr Ridge Patch Facebook

Lisa Stach: A car. She just got her license in May. She's got YEARS before she has any good reason to own a car. — Downers Grove Patch Facebook

Blair Malloy: My 2 older kids (ages 5 and almost 3) want Power wheels. I equate them to really expensive bumper cars at this point. — Elmhurst Patch Facebook

Kristen Norris Zimny: A trampoline for my 8 yr old-too much of a liability/dangerous. And a Mac book for my 11 year old- too young! — Geneva Patch Facebook

Stacy Gemelli: Barbie dream house, been on daughter's wish list the past 2 yrs. ( Santa thinks it's too much money, close to $150) at age 7, I'm she she'd rather get a bunch of gifts to un-wrap than only 1! — Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook

Summer Stevens Heil: A TV. I don't think parents should encourage children to hide in their bedrooms and veg out in front of Spongebob. If we are going to veg out in front of Spongebob, we will do it as a family! — Hinsdale-Clarendon Hills Patch Facebook

Cindy McDowell Abrahamson: A Mac and an iPhone. A big "No!" mostly because his big brother would have a fit. (Took him years to get his.) — La Grange Patch Facebook

Kerin Thomas Smith: A horse. — Naperville Patch Facebook

Ann Lythcke Moehling: My 6 yr old asked for a inground pool with a waterside. Not happening!! — St. Charles Patch Facebook

Teri Garrett Vanderlaan: BB gun. Self explanatory — Western Springs Patch Facebook

Laura McGowan: Call of Duty Black Ops II -- "but mom, everyone has it." Forget it. Not a chance that I'm giving a 13-year-old a game that has no redeeming qualities. — Wheaton Patch Facebook
