Commuter Parking in La Grange is Huge Problem!

I lived in La Grange for many years and take train to Chicago 2-3 days a week. I love La Grange but biggest frustration is metered parking. You can obviously buy decal parking that is ONLY issued for 3 months! City refuses to sell them on monthly bases and cannot explain why. We as residents should have a choice to buy these decal parking stickers that are good for 1 month simply because some people have different commute needs. PLEASE LA GRANGE CITY OFFICIALS EXPLAIN why there should be a problem? You will get your money, just give residents choice!

Another huge problem- metered parking. If you can't get spot at 9am-6pm meter parking, you can wait till 8:30 am and park by Stone Ave., miss the train that comes at 8:24 am and be late to work. You can also try to park at 8:24, pay meter but risk in getting a ticket for parking 5 minutes earlier!!!There are at least 15-20 empty meter spots available by Stone Ave. Metra Station that nobody uses during the day. Theses spots are available from 8:30/9:00 am for 8 hours and these are always empty! Why city of La Grange is making everything so complicated? Please let commuters use these meters and pay for them! Instead city of La Grange buys parking enforcing officer SMART car (MSRP new approximately $40,000) who drives around and issues tickets for LA GRANGE RESIDENTS that parks their cars 4-5 min earlier than meter allows (8:30 am meter at STONE AVE). Many commuters and residents of La Grange are furious and I would like to know how we all could resolve this problem. Any suggestions?

Why don't you park in the multi-million dollar commuter parking garage behind Village Hall? Village officials accepted over $3 million from the federal government to build a commuter parking garage.

I am assuming she is using the decal parking in the parking gargage. Which, by the way, is well used by commuters and people visiting downtown businesses and restaurants. It is always full so I guess it was a good investment by the village officials and the federal government. Still, I do think the "parking policeman" is an issue that needs to be addressed. I am not sure what this officer brings in through his vigilant hunt for parking misdemeanors, but it seems like we there are bigger issues the police could be dealing with in this town. Do we really need to ticket the cleaning lady parked in front of a house blocks away from schools or train? By the way, where is he when the beer trucks are unloading in the Cossitt School pick up line? Instead we need beat officers creating a presence in the downtown area. (This service was cut when La Grange lost some grant funding.) For those concerned about homeless and teens in the downtown area, a friendly officer who people know and trust might be part of the solution.

The parking situation is a problem and needs to be addressed. There needs to be more 12 hour parking available. This time of year, all of those spots are taken before the 7:30 trains. The spots in front of Stone Ave. station need to be opened up as 12 hour parking and it would also help if the plows didn't occupy the few 12 hour spots with their piles of snow. The entire system is archaic -- from the # of spots, to the decal system to the reliance on quarters instead of a system akin to Western Springs. Does anyone know if these issues have been addressed to the Village Board recently? If not, I think it is time to do so.

@ ROBERT- "Multi-million dollar commuter parking garage behind Village Hall" was built for La Grange visitors, who brings money to LG and is not available for commuters like us. They have only 15-20 decal parking spots available there, the other spots in garage is for 3 hour parking only. I have no problem with that at all. The issue is not that there are no available spots, the issue is that these spots are not filled during the day. Commuters can't park there from 7:30am to 6pm, only after 8:30am for 8 hours. These spots are metered parking, they are always empty during the day where we could use them and PAY for them. We need Village of LG to address this issue instead of sending officer to put $30 ticket on our cars for 5 min early parking! Give us chance to by monthly decal parking not 3 month parking! You'll get your money and we will be happy!!! It looks like La Grange only cares about themselves not residents of their village.

@ John- how we could address this parking issue to LG Village Board? It is huge frustration everyday. I am sure some students that goes to LT also are using these spots. They park in 12 hour zones from 7am to 3pm only and whoever takes train at 7:55 or at 8:24 are left without spots. There are different needs for commuters and LG needs to address this issue.

Western Springs has parking issues too. There is no parking for people that work in the village. There aren't that many businesses, so less visitors. As someone who works in LaGrange I can tell you it's not easy to park in town. I pay for a decal yet there are very few spots in the garage available at anytime. The lot on 6th and Harris also accommodates residents and is seldom plowed- making it hard to park and walk. There will always be parking issues in a busy community

While we all agree that parking is not designed to meet our needs, we have right to ask LG to make this issue less problematic. There are spots available, I have no problem to pay for them. The problem comes with limited time parking for commuters. I have read on La Grange patch Facebook that one lady parked her car for 3 hours in one spot and then parked in different spot on La Grange road and she got ticket for parking longer then 3 hours. This parking enforcement officer is basically told to collect as many tickets as possible at any cost. Solution is pretty simple as I mentioned before: make 8 hour meter parking for 12 hours from 7 am and let people buy decal parking on monthly basis. LG will not loose money, village will make money, plus less work for our parking police. I also agree with John about system being so outdated. You can only buy decal stickers by mail or at LG Village Hall that opens at 8:30. Why can't we buy pay on line? Let us have alternative of purchasing monthly decal parking on line and display printed sticker on our cars. Very simple and less work for everybody.
