Stories to keep your children busy in the car

Everyone seems to be making Spring Break plans, with many trips involving some time in the car. Here are some stories to keep your young children busy in the car.

Our daughters loved The Treebobs stories. These are available to download, via CD or in book form. The Treebobs are fanciful characters who work together to solve problems, often outwitting Rotten Rena. Despite her name, Rotten Rena isn't really scary. As the Tales4All website explains, "Her job is being the wicked witch of the Enchanted Forest. She is so bad at being bad that her job is constantly under threat." The stories, perfect for beginning and elementary school readers, include

Children who love animals will enjoy the Curious Critters series. Curious Critters One received five different national book awards. Author David FitzSimmons us described on the book jacket as "a writer, photographer and university professor. When he is not meandering through a meadow or paddling across a pond, you will find him teaching writing and literature at Ashland University."

What's great about the Curious Critters series is that there is plenty of information to keep older children engaged while the younger children will enjoy the photographs. Designed for children ages 2 - 8, our fourth grade daughters enjoyed the books as well. Each image had a well-written, often lyrical verse, giving information and fun facts about the critter. In Curious Critters Two, there's a funny limerick written by S. Skunk.

At the end of the book there is more scientific information and a glossary for those who want to know a little bit more. The Curious Critters website offers the books, as well as supplementary games. For more information visit http://www.wildirispublishing.com/
