Saint Francis Xavier 4th graders raise record breaking amount for food pantry

Saint Francis Xavier's 4th grade students presented Mary Freeman, Saint Francis Xavier's food pantry coordinator, with a check for $500.31 this past Friday.  This is the highest amount ever donated from this annual collection.  The pantry provides food to approximately 275 people in the La Grange community.

The 4th graders collected funds over the past few weeks as part of their service theme, HUNGER.  Posters were placed around the school and collection jars in each classroom requesting for all students from all grades to please bring in 7 cents a day or about 50 cents a week of their own money (equal to the price of one candy bar).  Why 7 cents?  According to Bread.org., “hunger could be cut in half in the United States and worldwide for seven cents per American per day.”

The 4th grade hunger theme is just one of many in the school-wide service program where each grade has a service theme.  The 4th grade students will continue to learn about hunger and how to help as the year continues.  One of the highlights of the year will be visiting Feed My Starving Children to hand pack meals on December 7, 2012 as part of our All-School Service Day.
