Baby Sloth Bears Make Brookfield Zoo Debut (Photos)

Visitors will get the chance to learn more about the cubs, and the zoo's other bears, during Bear Awareness Weekend, May 18-19.

Two sloth bear cubs—a boy and a girl—said hello to visitors for the first time Wednesday after their Jan. 20th birth at the Brookfield Zoo.

The cubs are the first sloth bears to be successfully born at the zoo, according to a press release.

The baby boy and girl each weighed less than a pound at birth but at 3-and-a-half months old they now weigh about 10-20 pounds.

Sloth bears make notable moms because they carry their cubs on their backs, unlike most bear species. This pair’s mom, Hani, is on loan from Capron Park Zoo in Attleboro, MA.

Visitors will have a chance to learn more about the sloth bear cubs, as well as grizzly and polar bears, during Bear Awareness Weekend, May 18-19. Staff will host intermittent Zoo Chats throughout the weekend.
