Traffic Alert: Repair Work to Begin on I-90

Road closures and work are scheduled at night, with traffic returning to normal at 5 a.m. each day until construction is completed.

Two road projects are scheduled to begin on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90).

The exit ramp from the westbound Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90) to southbound Barrington Road and the eastbound entrance ramp from southbound Barrington Road will close nightly for pavement rehabilitation work as part of the I-90 Roadway and Bridge Rehabilitation Project between the Elgin Toll Plaza and Barrington Road.

The ramp closures are scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Sunday, July 24, and continue nightly through Friday, July 29. Ramps will reopen to traffic by 5 a.m. each morning. No detour will be posted. Traffic will be able to use either the Roselle Road interchange 3 miles to the east or the IL Route 59 interchange located 3 miles to the west while the closures are in place.

Crews will be milling the asphalt surface on the ramps and completing concrete patches as needed. When that work is completed, the ramps will be resurfaced. All work will be done during overnight hours to minimize the impact to traffic.

The Illinois Tollway is resurfacing the 50-year-old section of I-90 between U.S. Route 20 and Genoa Road and between the Elgin Toll Plaza and Barrington Road to provide a new, smooth surface and extend the life of the roadway. Roadway improvements also include rehabilitation of 25 bridge structures on I-90. Work is scheduled for completion by the end of this year.

The other project involves the ramp carrying traffic from eastbound I-90 to northbound I-294.

The ramp will close overnight on Wednesday, July 27, to provide a work zone for the removal of overhead bridge beams as part of the I-294/I-90 Tri-Level Bridge Rehabilitation Project.

The project includes rehabilitation work on two flyover ramp bridges in the interchange, including work this year on the ramp carrying traffic from southbound I-294 to eastbound I-90 and work in 2012 on the ramp carrying northbound I-294 traffic to westbound I-90. The $13 million project will be complete by the end of 2012.

A detour will be posted, directing traffic to exit at Cumberland.

To help direct drivers, the Illinois Tollway will provide information cards with the detour map at the River Road Toll Plaza. Construction project and detour information is also available in the Traffic & Construction section on the Tollway's Web site at illinoistollway.com.

Work Zone Safety

A 45 m.p.h. speed limit is in effect at all times in all construction zones, whether workers are present. Drivers should continue to watch for changing traffic patterns and use caution, especially when workers are present.

Illinois State Police have zero tolerance for drivers speeding in work zones. The minimum penalty for speeding in a work zone is $375. Posted signs advise drivers of a $10,000 fine and 14-year jail sentence for hitting a roadway worker. Also, the use of cell phones in construction zones is prohibited.

The I-294/I-90 Tri-Level Bridge Rehabilitation Project is part of the Illinois Tollway's $5.8 billion Congestion-Relief Program—Open Roads for a Faster Future, which is reducing travel times by rebuilding and restoring nearly all of the system, adding lanes to many miles of existing roads, converting 22 toll plazas to barrier-free open road tolling, and extending I-355 south to I-80 in Will County. By the end of 2010, the Illinois Tollway completed nearly $5 billion in improvements on the Tollway's roads, resulting in more efficient travel and a smoother ride for motorists.
