Downed Wire Causes Multi-Garage Fire in La Grange Park

La Grange Park Fire Department volunteers responded to a multi-garage fire on the 1200 block of Newberry Avenue at about 5:30 p.m. today.

Police closed three blocks of Kemmen Avenue and Newberry Avenue in La Grange Park around 5:30 p.m. tonight while fire department crews from La Grange Park responded to a multi-garage fire on the 1200 block of Newberry Avenue.

According to fire department officials, the cause of the blaze was due to a downed power line. A large branch had fallen from a tree along the back side of a garage behind 1215 Newberry Ave. causing the wire to break. Sparks from the downed wire caused two residential garages to catch fire.

By 6 p.m. crews had extinguished the fire and officials from ComEd were on the scene to fix the broken wire. Power was cut to the surrounding neighborhood as the fire department and ComEd crews responded.
