What Should Open at the Old YMCA Site in La Grange?

Developer, YMCA agree on sale of former YMCA property in La Grange. No details available on the proposed mixed-use development project, in its "early stages."

It's too early to tell what we'll see open at the corner of La Grange Road and Ogden Avenue in La Grange, Opus Development Company said in a statement Wednesday.

Officials of the YMCA of Metro Chicago on Tuesday voted to approve the Minneapolis-based firm's bid that was somewhere "in the neighborhood of $9 million" on the 4.3-acre parcel formerly occupied by the Rich Port YMCA in La Grange, according to a news release from the YMCA of Metro Chicago.

According to the release, the Opus project includes housing, retail space and parking, but no YMCA at the site at 31 E. Ogden Ave. in La Grange.

Opus issued a statement Wednesday morning, saying the project is in the "early stages" of planning.

"Opus is not in a position to disclose details at this time. We will keep you informed as additional details are available," Opus said.

A spokesperson for the YMCA of Metro Chicago said Wednesday that the YMCA expects to close on the property before the end of the year, but there is no "firm" timeline in place. Opus did not provide any information regarding an expected closing date.

Opus was the developer of the Burr Ridge Village Center, the 556,000-square-foot mixed-use development completed in October 2009. The center includes 193 lofts and condos, 33,000 square feet of office space and 205,000 square feet of retail space, according to the Opus website. The development has national retailers as tenants, including Ann Taylor LOFT and Starbucks Coffee.

The firm is also currently working on a retail development in Glen Ellyn, slated to open in January 2014. The 31,000-square-foot development would be anchored by The Fresh Market, and has secured Great Clips and Tide Dry Cleaners as tenants.
