La Grange Experimenting with Free Valet in Downtown

The current program runs through the end of January on Friday and Saturday nights; the $3,500 monthly cost is split by the Village and the Business Association.

Visitors to downtown La Grange can enjoy a valet service, subsidized by the Village and the La Grange Business Association, on Fridays and Saturdays through the end of this month, free of charge except for tips, The Doings La Grange reports.

According to the paper, the program is meant to push cars to locations further away from the downtown center south of the tracks to free up space for customers; the Village estimates $200 extra a day in sales to local businesses per extra parking space.

“It’s not that La Grange doesn’t have enough spaces; it’s just human nature that everyone wants the closest spot, and that causes problems,” new LGBA President Steve Jasinski told the paper. “We’re trying to think outside the box.”

The service is offered on Fridays and Saturdays after 3:00 p.m. between Prasino and Francesca's Bellaza and also after 5:00 p.m. between Nicksons and Santiago's.

I've solved the weekend parking problem in downtown La Grange: I don't go there anymore. There's nothing worth the hassle.

Unless you have a disability, is it really that much of a problem to "park and walk"? We'll skip the mantra concerning our country's ever growing(pun)obesity problem. I would suggest (again)that having a policeman in front of town hall in the evening hours would be get a better return on our money/resources. Kids in the fountain, screaming, jacked up on Starbucks (ah...they are our future aren’t they?) while Mom & Dad are...not quite sure where they are. So, to conclude, less valet-more police at night. Thank you.

Anthony, the Doings article clearly states that... 1. this is a trial period to determine if moving parked cars away from downtown generates more revenue for businesses. 2. that the LG Business Assoc. and Village are SPLITTING the cost of $3500 a month...$1750 ea. per month, with a possible return of $150-$300 a day. I don't know of a police officer that would be willing to stand out in the cold and winter weather to guard Village Hall against kids jacked up on Starbucks for $1750/month. This is program designed to bring more business to our town, it deserves a chance to succeed, let's just keep everything in perspective.

Understood..I'm just making a broader appeal that: a. Were not opera goers getting out of limos...walking a couple of blocks won't hurt anybody. b. I still maintain the that the issue of increased security downtown is just that, in issue. In the winter, it's pretty quiet because even the kids go home at some point but in the height of summer-it's a different story.
