Fashion: Look Hot, Stay Cool, Buy Local

Area clothiers highlight custom outfits perfect for showing off a great look, even in the worst heat.

As the heat wave drags through the Midwest, it's more difficult than usual for most people, save swimsuit connoisseurs, to be fashionable. But, area clothing stores are up for the task of keeping women looking hot but staying cool; they offer the latest summer fashions, without showcasing outfits that everyone else will be wearing.

Arrive in downtown La Grange with any budget and be assured of leaving with an airy summer outfit and the sense of community that comes with supporting local businesses. Not to mention a rewarding encounter with the passionate boutique owners and staff featured here, who give personal recommendations for a May-through-August outfit.

Suzette and Ari Smejkal own this boutique, where Suzette's pick of clothing and jewelry for sale—often the work of local designers—drape on Ari's hand-built custom dressers. For summer, the Smejkals suggested a perfect outfit for a day outdoors with unique jewelry and casual, yet fashionable shorts and a unique tank top. It's polished yet versatile enough to where from the beach to dinner.

The Hope Chest, 717 W. Hillgrove Avenue

This nonprofit resale boutique, benefiting the Constance Morris House shelter for abused women and their children, offers gently used quality clothing for incredibly low prices and unlike most resale shops, they don't sell toys or much of anything else, except clothing. The staff showcased a classy dress appropriate for a evening date on a warm night. Its floral detail and flattering deep scoop-neck cut only seemed better at such a low price.

Price: Dress, $9

Vintage Charm,  729 W. Hillgrove Avenue

The name says it all-—everything about this boutique is incredibly charming—from its creative and catchy signs, to its accessories and clothing. The atmosphere is due in part to owner Nancy Allodi, who discovers many of the store's features. Allodi recommended this perfect get-up for the rare and cherished cooler evening.

Price: Cardigan: Hazel, $88; Eyelit Tunic: Mystree, $46; Khaki Shorts: Kut Jeans, $59; Necklace: Marlyn Schiff, $52

Mary Ann's Shoppe, 21 Calendar Avenue

Mary Ann Doehring, who has owned and managed this clothier for 50 years this year, put together a classy outfit suitable for a boat ride on Lake Michigan or for an Sunday brunch outdoors.
