Inmate Teaches Art to Young Girl, now Grandmother

La Grange Public Library is now displaying “Sculpture by Holly,” twenty three pieces of clay sculpture by Hollis Hess. This exhibit is part of the library’s rotating display of local and area artists. Hess’s work will be on display through August 30.

Hess, a self-educated artist, has studied and produced work in various mediums. Her pencil and ink drawings, pastels, oil paintings and cooper enameling all became building blocks for her work in clay sculpture.

At the age of 14, Hess’s father took her work to show an artistic inmate at the prison where he worked. This began an unconventional relationship of art teacher/critic and student between the inmate and young Hess. His influence taught Hess the fundamentals of anatomy, which are basic to her sculpture work today.
