Free Community Event: A Salute to African American History, Art, and Culture Saturday, March 10

The community is invited and welcome to view A Salute to African American History, Art, and Culture.  William Branch, a retired history teacher and associate principal at Evanston Township High School, will share with the public his collection of photographs, artifacts, household goods, farm tools, art (prints and originals) highlighting the history, art, and culture of African Americans.

Branch, who was honored as the Illinois Teacher of the Year in 1990, has had his exhibit shown in schools,  churches, businesses, and organizations throughout the greater Chicago area.

His collection will be open for viewing on Saturday, March 10 from 4:00 -5:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church of La Grange (150 S. Ashland, LG, lower level).  The public is invited and welcome to view
this exhibit.  Mr. Branch will also be available for questions.

The exhibit consists of several separate displays, all related but each having a distinct message for those who are willing to learn from history. The exhibit includes:

The  African Connection: Consists primarily of African masks and statues

America: Commemorates the period of slavery from 1450 –  1865 AD, and includes a section on Cotton and the Cotton Culture

Segregation Before Civil Rights and Jim Crow:  Posters showing what segregated America was like before Civil Rights movement

The Struggle For Civil Rights (1954 – 1965): Posters highlighting the Civil Rights movement

Great African-American Men and Women:      The art of Michael McBride showing images of great men and women whose contributions to the well-being of mankind are extraordinary and legendary

Stereotypes and Prejudices in American Life: A display of hurtful images and stereotypes which have been and can be detrimental to African-Americans

Household  Goods and Farm Tools: Designed to give a glimpse of life before electricity, natural gas, and power tools  (A step back in time)

Mr. Branch’s exhibit has been on display at Lyons
Township High   School libraries during the month of February.
