Dr. Seuss Was On The Loose At LTHS

Student cast delivered energetic, comical show-stopper during four-day run of "Seussical: The Musical."

As the orchestra begins tuning, and the audience is quieting down, the feeling of Dr. Seuss radiates through the Reber Center for the Performing Arts. Without a second notice, the audience becomes pinned to their seats and embarks on the roller-coaster ride that is !

Seussical: The Musical, presented by the Theatre, Music, and Dance Departments at , 100 S. Brainard Ave., directed by Eugene O’Reilly, opened Feb. 17 and ran through Feb. 20. The show is based on the beloved stories of Theodore Giesel, better known as Dr. Seuss, with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens.

The show takes place in the imaginative and colorful world of Dr. Seuss. The plot mostly follows Seuss’s famous Horton Hears a Who, but is mixed with many of Seuss’s other beloved stories and characters.

At the center of the story: Jojo, an imaginative thinker played by sophomore Kaley Shannon from La Grange. Jojo’s outlandish “thinks” often get him into trouble, until they save Whoovile. The story is narrated by everyone’s favorite feline, the Cat in the Hat, who is played by sophomore Chloe Baldwin from Western Springs.

From the moment the Cat in the Hat “pops” onto the stage, and the cast, comprised of nearly 75 high school students, comes running down the aisles and dancing their way center-stage, the atmosphere was instantly, and forever, transformed into the world of Dr. Seuss.

As the opening number came to an end, the show truly took off, in an unbelievable, and crazy, spectacle of theatre. The upwards of 150 brightly colored costumes, paired with all the lighting and special effects, made Seussical nothing short of visually-stunning.

The full orchestra brought Stephen Flaherty’s rockin’ score to life. And, the did not disappoint: Baldwin's interpretation of the Cat in the Hat was utterly hilarious, while Shannon’s interpretation of Jojo, and stunning voice, kept the audience smiling. Nick Lindmark, a senior, of Brookfield, delivered acting and singing as Horton, matched only by that of his counterpart, Merle Palmer, a senior, of La Grange, who played the loveable Gertrude McFuzz.
