Ceremony Celebrates LT's Emerging Artists

Art ceremony recognizes students for award-winning projects.

Lyons Township High School celebrated the arts on Wednesday at an award ceremony held at the Corral on LT's south campus. Parents, students and teachers attended the ceremony and browsed the art.

The event recognized the 75 student  that were issued by Scholastic Inc. earlier this year at a regional contest. Of the 75 awards, 15 were Gold Key Awards, 28 were Silver Key Awards and 32 were honorable mentions. Several students won multiple awards for a variety of submitted pieces.

“LT is blessed to have this high number of students who are artistically gifted,” said Leslie Stickels, chair of the Fine Arts Division. “We always have a good number of them who are scholastically successful. And it’s not just one type of art that our students are successful at, which is a true testament to our teachers and to the community our students come from.”

Projects that received Gold Key Awards will advance to Scholastic Art Awards national competition this spring in New York.

The award-winning art, along with dozens of pieces not submitted for the contest, are on display for the public this week from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Corral and will be available from noon to 4 p.m. this weekend.

About 20 community members came through the Corral before the art ceremony began.

Western Springs resident Melissa Hennessy and her daughter Nora stopped by to view the gallery even though none of her kids attend LT yet. She said her family frequently takes arts and crafts classes, so she was hoping to get some ideas for her next class.

“When I looked at my property taxes this week, I was angry,” Hennessy said. “But after coming here, I know all that money is worth it because this is some exciting work. These kids have first class opportunities at LT.”
