Vintage Hats on Display at La Grange Area Historical Society

A gorgeous collection of hats from 1880 through the 1970's is currently being featured at the historical society.

Thealways has interesting and topical displays. When they show off a collection, let me tell you, they do it right. I was invited to view their hat collection and see the presentation they were giving to the Spring Rock Questers.

I was unfamiliar with the Questers but Marti Tracy, a member of the group, was able to help me out.

“We are a group of collectors and antiquers that meet to discuss and learn about something collectible," Tracy said. “We are a group of twenty-five people with a passion to learn about antiques. We meet once a month and at our last meeting of the year we go on a field trip.”

This year the group came to the historical society to learn about vintage hats.

The ladies held a short meeting while eating lunch before Mary Ann Sward gave her presentation about the various hats that were known to be owned by La Grange residents. Next, Ellie Carroll gave a presentation about the history of the hats and even put a few of them on to show how they are supposed to be worn.

The women are a wealth of information every time I visit LGAHS, and they are always well versed on the display and any type of history about La Grange.

The hats will be on display through the summer and it’s definitely one you don’t want to miss if you have a daughter. The hats are available for viewing every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the last Sunday of each month from 1 to 4 p.m.

You will be amazed at how many different styles they have, and how the entire house has hats put into every nook and cranny. I have to admit, some of these hats put ones from the royal wedding to shame, and they are right here in La Grange!

Of course, LGAHS is always looking for donations and would welcome any hats that you are willing to part with. There are a few styles that Carroll said are missing from the collection. You never know, your basement or attic might have just the hat they are looking for. You can contact them at (708) 482-4248 or email them at lagrangehistory@sbcglobal.net.
