Tennis Club to Hold Tournament for O'Laughlin Memorial Fund

Score Tennis and Fitness Academy in Countryside will host a round robin tennis tournament this Friday at 7 p.m. to raise money for a Kelli O'Laughlin Memorial Fund.

, located at 6550 Joliet Rd. in Countryside, will host a round-robin doubles tennis tournament this Friday at 7p.m. to raise funds for Kelli O'Laughlin's memorial fund.

The 14-year-old when she came home from school and interrupted a burglary in progress, police said.

Linda Kurtyka, the manager at Score said the idea for the fundraiser came about, because the O'Laughlin family loved tennis so much.

Originally, Score had planned to make all proceeds of the tournament go towards a fund that would pay out for information that led to the arrest and conviction of her killer.

After authorities announced they had  for her murder, Score decided to give the money raised to Kelli's family to use at their discretion.

"There are about three funds set up for her right now, so we are just going to give the money to the family, and they can decide what to do with it," said Kurtyka.

Kurtyka said O'Laughlin had just started taking tennis lessons at the club and came in about twice a week. Her father also played at the club in an adult league as well as for a USTA team.

"Our owners have kids the same age, and we thought this was something we could do to hold a benefit for them," said Kurtyka.

Score is guaranteeing every player a half hour of play on Friday, and teams will rotate on the half hour. Donations for the tournament will go directly to the O'Laughlin family.

Score is asking everyone to park at the and will provide a free shuttle from the lot to the club.

Each entrant is asked to make a $10 minimum donation to play in the round-robin doubles tournament on Friday night. All checks should be made out to Score/Kelli O'Laughlin fund.
