Retiring After 37 Years of Fixing Up La Grange

Jerry Nichols started for the La Grange Water Department in 1975 and stayed on when that was merged with the Village's Public Works Department.

A Crest Hill man who has worked for the Village of La Grange's municipal services for the last 37 years (since 1975) has finally retired, the Doings Western Springs reports.

Jerry Nichols, 62, has worked for the Department of Public Works since 1988, and the former Water Department from 1975 until the departments were merged, the paper reported. Nichols, a Vietnam combat veteran told the paper he plans to spend his retirement cooking and seeing family.

"It’s always different," Nichols told the paper, of what he liked about his job. "One minute you’re picking up leaves, and the next hour, you’re knee-deep in mud, or putting up holiday decorations. Those 90-degree days laying asphalt were something, but I like to sweat anyway. I was a jack of all trades."
