LaGrange Girl Shoots Hole-in-One at Summer Camp

What are the odds of an amateur golfer, let alone an 11-year-old beginning golfer, shooting a hole in one?

LaGRANGE, Illinois — When Mary Beck returns to school in the fall and writes about what she did on her summer vacation, she may want to add “shot hole-in-one at summer camp.”

The 11-year-old LaGrange girl recorded a hole-in-one at Loras College All Sports Camp in Dubuque, IA, on Thursday morning.

One of the college’s professors, Glenn Pohland, was so excited about Mary’s achievement that he contacted Patch.

“Quite an amazing accomplishment for a young beginning golfer,” Pohland said via email.

What are the odds of shooting a hole-in-one? According to Golf Digest, there are 150,000 holes-in-one annually from an estimated 490 million rounds a golf.

The odds of a professional golfer acing a hole are 2,500 to 1. For an amateur, let along an 11-year-old beginning golfer — the odds are 12,500 to 1.

Tiger Woods was 6 years old when he aced his first hole; Michelle Wie was 12 when she shot her first hole in one.

“Mary recorded her ace on Hole 2 at Derby Grange Golf Course in Asbury, IA,” Pohland wrote. “The hole is a  Par 3, 65 yards, and she used her driver. Witnessing the shot were Monika Urban and Lydia Przytulski.”
