Gilbert RR Crossing Closed This Week

A complete closure of the crossing will be required to perform work at the BNSF crossing until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad plans to reconstruct the Gilbert Avenue railroad crossing starting Friday, Sept. 20, according to the Village of La Grange.

The scope of work includes replacement of all railroad track, ties, crossing mats and asphalt in order to provide for a smoother crossing. A complete closure of the crossing will be required to perform this work beginning at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 20, and lasting until 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27.

Gilbert Avenue is shared between the Villages of La Grange and Western Springs.

Traffic will be detoured to cross at Wolf Road in Western Springs to the west, and Brainard Avenue in La Grange, to the east. Traffic should utilize Hillgrove Avenue, Burlington Avenue and Cossitt Avenue to access these alternate crossings. Signs will be posted in the area designating the detour routes for motorists while the crossing is under construction.

Pedestrians should use the dedicated below grade crossing at Clausen Avenue in Western Springs, which is approximately two blocks west of Gilbert Avenue or the at grade crossing at Wolf Road and Brainard Avenue to cross the BNSF Railroad. Pedestrians should only cross at these identified, dedicated pedestrian crossings.

Residents may also experience a temporary increase in noise levels associated with railroad equipment performing the necessary work during these hours.
