The Transition House program within the La Grange, IL community high school assists handicapped women and men, 18 to 22 who have completed high school to continue learning life-skills vital to their developing independence. The 2012/2013 group size is 32 members growing to an anticipated fifty plus members in 2014.

The LT Transition House program is aimed at guiding individual personal development into obtaining life and work skills with the goal of becoming increasingly self-sufficient and developing salable skills to offer in the job market.

Part of this program is the significant expansion of an urban garden/farm adjacent to the Transition House. The grant money, if awarded, will be used to supplement high school district funding for this program. Specifically, raised bed development, soil purchase, seed and plant purchases and necessary specialized garden tools for use by the participants will be purchased.

The gardens objective is a learning tool. To teach where food comes from, how to grow it, care for its development and how to harvest the products of the garden. Further, the produce will be sold through the La Grange Farmers Market. Here the primary objective is to introduce food handling knowledge for cleanliness and safety, money handling skills, interpersonal skills with customers, and salesmanship to the public. Accompanying these skills is the development of personal strengths of self-confidence, trust, risk taking and personal enrichment.

Please mark your calendars highlighting September 27 through October 11 as the period in which to vote.
