Collie/Lab Firley Needs Your Nurture

Introducing FIRLEY, a Border Collie/Labrador mix who is approximately 6-7 years old and about 50 pounds. Firley was rescued from Chicago’s Animal Care and Control late in 2012; he was very scared and timid at the shelter but has really made significant progress with his foster mom. From what we have witnessed, Firley was most likely mistreated or abused prior to his rescue; therefore, he requires a special adopter who will continue to nurture Firley.

Firley loves to run around in the yard and when inside will chew on a bone for a bit and then nap. He is really pretty “low key” and would make an ideal companion for a more calm and quiet household. Although it has taken some time, Firley will now lay next to his foster mom on the couch and seek out petting and attention. He now wants to be with his foster mom whenever and wherever she is in the home, so he would do best in a household where he will be included in all aspects of daily living. Firley LOVES food and will jump in the air with excitement at dinner time; his foster mom makes him sit and settle down prior to being fed and Firley is doing well with this training. He is housebroken. Because of Firley's timidity, he is approved for adult households.

Firley is crated while his foster mom is away at work, as well as crated at night since there are other dogs in the home and Firley is afraid of many other dogs. He takes a long time to warm up and seems to do best with other male dogs or as the only dog. Firley’s foster mom indicates that “he would probably be all right in a home with no other dogs but he is learning to trust dogs again and to play. It is a beautiful thing to witness.”

This handsome boy has been neutered, inoculated against diseases, dewormed, tested for Heartworm Disease (negative) and microchipped. In addition, Firley had surgery to remove tumors in his testis - a condition caused by not neutering him earlier in his life. He recovered nicely and is cancer free based on testings.
