LT Transition Students Decorate Grandfather Clock for "Hour Town" Art Exhibit

Students in LT's transition program are the designers of the West Suburban Chamber of Commerce's grandfather clock this year. The clock will appear in downtown La Grange as part of the village's summer art exhibit.

Students in Lyons Township High School's transition program will have their work on display this summer as part of the La Grange Business Association's summer art exhibit, "Hour Town La Grange: Time Well Spent." This summer, grandfather clocks will dot the La Grange landscape for the exhibit. Previous year's exhibits have included cow statues and rocking chairs purchased by area businesses and painted by local artists. The West Suburban Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WSCCI) commissioned transition students again this year to decorate their grandfather clock. Students in the program turned the clock into a tree and have spent time painting on leaves and branches. Titled, Hour Tree: It's Time To Grow, the clock will be on display in …

Chimera's Comics Celebrates Free Comic Book Day

Hanging out with Steve Brown and Carmelo Chimera at Chimera's Comics in La Grange for Free Comic Book Day.

The turnout for Free Comic Book Day at Chimera's Comics in La Grange was proof of how far the store has come in year, owner Steve Brown said on Saturday. Brown and his business partner Carmelo Chimera opened to a line of customers already waiting at the door for the event. Over the course of the day, they estimated that 500 people walked through their doors to grab free comic books, pick up new merchandise, and hang out with other comic book fans. The store was packed at 2:30 p.m., as Chimera and Brown ran around helping customers find new material. "Do you have any comics about politics?" a customer asked Brown. He pointed out a graphic novel called Ex Machina. "There's really something for everyone," Brown said of comic book themes. In …

Readers' Choice Winner: Honey Bee Café

Honey Bee Café in Western Springs was this week's Readers' Choice winner in our Mothers Day Brunch category.

Honey Bee Café, the winner of our reader-voted "Best Place for Mothers Day Brunch" poll this week, has only one review on our site right now (some of those devoted voters should remedy that!) but it's a great one, citing friendly staff and "atmosphere of a place 'where everybody knows your name.'" The Greek-style breakfast-and-lunch diner is notable for its expansive menu and prime location at the corner of Gilbert Avenue and 47th Street (right across from the Garden Market shopping center.) Appropriately for a Greek restaurant, Honey Bee puts a particular emphasis on the quality of their omelets. On Sunday, May 13, Honey Bee should definitely be one of your top choices to go with Mom for an excellent breakfast, brunch or lunch. The diner …

Tips From a Vet: Is Your Pet Ready for Warm Weather?

Our early spring could mean more ticks, fleas and mosquitoes. Is your dog ready? Patch talks to La Grange Park's newest veterinarian, Dr. Susan Dowd, at Arbor Animal Hospital.

While it was nice to have such a mild winter and such a warm spring, it could have some consequences come summer. The warmer weather could mean more ticks, fleas and mosquitoes looking to dine on your dog. Luckily, La Grange Park has a new vet who knows her stuff. Dr. Susan Dowd, owner of Arbor Animal Hospital, 14 E. 31st St., in La Grange Park, said it’s easier to deal with problems (and cheaper too) with a little foresight. Since opening up her new clinic in La Grange Park, Dowd said the response from the community has been amazing. She's seen over 500 pets since opening in March, with nearly half her clients from the practice she worked at previously in Brookfield making the transition with her. "Ticks are what you need to worry about …

Readers' Choice: Best Mothers Day Brunch

Where in the Lyons Township area would you take your mom this May 13 (or, for moms, where would you like to be taken?

Welcome to Patch's "Readers Choice" series! Vote in the poll below and then tell us your choice (or who we might have missed) in the comment section. The "Mothers Day Breakfast" poll will close at 9 a.m. Friday, May 4, when a winning business will be announced! Mothers Day is fast approaching, on Sunday, March 13! Fun fact: we're two years shy of the 100th anniversary of Mothers Day becoming a federal holiday (it was so proclaimed in 1914.) The federal mandate did not include "take Mom out to brunch," but de facto tradition has taken care of that particular omission. If you're not making your mother breakfast in bed—especially if you lack the skills for that particular endeavor—it's our definite recommendation that you treat her to a …
