Fighting hunger with Empty Bowls in La Grange Park.
With over 700 bowls awaiting donors on Thursday night at the Empty Bowls event in La Grange Park, there was a little something for everyone. Laid out on tables at Village Potters, 333 N. La Grange Rd., members of the community looking to support a good cause picked over handmade bowls crafted by Village Potters, students at Lyons Township High School and members of the First United Methodist Church and First Congregational Church of La Grange. Everything from artistically sculpted bowls to bowls with cats was on display at the event, which ran from 6-9 p.m. "It's a good way to make art relevant," said Village Potter owner Nancy Gorman. “It’s something we wanted to continue." Village Potters has picked up the project, which began in the La …

The Theatre of Western Springs presents George Bernard Shaw’s “The Devil’s Disciple,” a story of patriotism and unexpected courage in colonial times.
Richard “Dick” Dudgeon is not what most people in 1777’s Websterbridge, New Hampshire would call a virtuous man. A freewheeling, carousing scoundrel and a smuggler by trade, he is absurdly irreverent among the strict and pious, prone to mocking japes and loud satanic proclamations. But in George Bernard Shaw’s The Devil’s Disciple, playing the next two weekends at the Theatre of Western Springs, it is Dudgeon—the titular disciple—who takes on an astonishing burden of self-sacrifice in the name of American patriotism, defiantly turning his impudence upon those who have sworn to see him executed. Set against the background of the early Revolutionary War, The Devil’s Disciple shows a community on the brink, occupied by British redcoats in …

Artist Charley Krebs shows off his Patch work at Riverside Public Library.
For cartoonist Charley Krebs, drawing his thoughts has always been a form of shorthand journalism. "A good image will draw you in," Krebs said of his work. "It makes an editorial comment and can start a good discussion." Krebs has been drawing the news since 1979, first at his college newspaper and most recently here at Patch. Readers can see his Sunday Cartoon weekly on their local Patch site where Krebs offers his unique vision of the world and his opinion on events that matter to readers. While much may have changed in the cartooning business since he got his start, Krebs said he loves the ability to work with a digital news site. "Everything is instantaneous," he said. "I can come up with an idea, draw it and have it up on the site the…

Here’s what he had to say. La Grange Patch: Tell us a little about yourself. What's your connection to La Grange and what do you do for a living? Jeff Johnson: I’m 45 years old.
