Fey & Co. Jewelers Reopens After Car Hits Storefront

Elderly driver not injured but cause of accident unidentified.

19 W. Calendar Ave. in La Grange, reopened Saturday afternoon after a car struck its storefront at about 9:37 a.m. that day.

The driver, a 78-year-old Willow Springs man, refused transportation by fire department ambulance to the hospital after his 2004 Buick LeSabre struck the building, La Grange police said. Neither the accident reports nor police shift reports indicate what caused his car to hit the building, or whether he was ticketed.

Edgar Fey, co-owner of the three-store jewelry chain, said he was at the Naperville location when the accident happened and was not able to talk to the driver by the time he got to the La Grange location. No customers were in the store at the time, said an employee of the La Grange store Monday morning.

Fey said the car struck and pushed in brick work to the right of the front door but did not enter the store. Jewelry on display was not damaged, he said.

No pedestrians, nor anyone in the store, nor the driver, sustained injuries, Fey said. “That’s the best result of everything," he said.

The store was boarded up and a village building inspector initially recommended Saturday by telephone that the store stay closed until Monday, March 28, when the structure could be inspected. After being told there was no structural damage, Pat Benjamin, La Grange community development director, said the store could remain open, according to police. Construction workers were at the store Monday morning repairing the damage.

Fey said he has not yet talked to his stores' insurance company and does not have an estimate of damage. “We’ll fix it up; it’ll look better than ever," he said.
