Plymouth Place Volunteers Donate Sleeping Mats For Homeless
Plymouth Place Residents recently donated eight sleeping mats for homeless people made from plastic grocery bags to BEDS Plus, a nonprofit providing services to homeless in the near west Chicago suburbs. Every week, volunteers work on the project together recycling donated grocery bags. The Plymouth Place volunteers estimate that about 500 plastic grocery bags are cut into strips, rolled into balls of plarn (plastic yarn) and then crocheted into each mat. The mats are durable and provide an extra layer to stay warm and dry, particularly as the weather turns cooler. The group presented these first mats to Tina Rounds, BEDS Plus executive director, and the volunteers plan to continue making them as a way to help the area’s homeless.
